Case says that we are now in the “Third Wave” of the Internet, which is a new way of thinking. During the first Wave, AOL and other companies built the infrastructure that allowed people to connect to the Internet. In the second Wave, companies like Google and Facebook built on top of the Internet to make search and social networking tools. At the same time, apps like Snapchat and Instagram took advantage of the smartphone revolution. Case says that we are now in the Third Wave, a time when entrepreneurs will make significant changes in big “real world” sectors like health, education, transportation, energy, and food, which will change how we live our daily lives. But to do well in the Third Wave, you’ll need different skills, and Case shows you how to get there.
The Third Wave is a mix of a memoir, a political statement, and a guide for what to do in the future. Case explains with passion and clarity how new technology companies (of which, he says, a growing number will not be based in Silicon Valley) will have to rethink their relationships with customers, competitors, and governments.
