Book Description:
Ben Shapiro, a New York Times best-selling author, contends that America has a God-shaped hole in its heart that we shouldn’t try to fill with politics and hate.
Ben Shapiro gave a talk at UC Berkeley in 2016. Ironically, his address, which was on the need for free speech and reasoned debate, necessitated the presence of hundreds of police officers from 10 UC campuses around the state.
He has come to make the case that the Western world is experiencing an existential and intellectual crisis. The two tenets upon which our liberties rest are that (1) every person is formed in God’s image, and (2) humans are endowed with reason to discover God’s universe.
These principles have given rise to scientific inquiry, the hope for advancement, the protection of individual liberties, economic growth, social harmony, and aesthetic excellence. Jerusalem and Athens established America, stopped slavery, beat the Nazis and the Communists, freed billions from poverty, and gave billions of spiritual meaning. The Declaration of Independence, Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, and Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Prison all have their origins in the principles of Jerusalem and Athens, as do the Magna Carta and the Peace of Westphalia.
Those cultures who turned their backs on Jerusalem and Athens are now nothing more than ruins. As a result of adopting a utopian vision of “social justice,” the Soviets starved and murdered tens of millions because they disagreed with Judeo-Christianity and Greek natural law principles. The Nazis disregarded natural law and the Judeo-Christian tradition and sent infants into gas chambers. The people of oil-rich Venezuela have devolved to eating dogs because their government opposes Judeo-Christian principles and Greek natural law.
Moral relativism and the reign of passion replace Judeo-Christian ethics and Greek natural law. We’re watching our culture disintegrate into primitive forms of tribalism, hedonism, and moral relativism. We can replace our rejection of Judeo-Christian principles and Greek natural law with accepting intersectionality, scientific materialism, progressive politics, authoritarian leadership, and nationalist solidarity.
In this case, we just cannot.
Ben Shapiro boldly demonstrates in The Right Side of History why too many of us have lost sight of the moral purpose that pushes each of us to be better, or the holy obligation to work together for the larger good, or both, and why this has made the West unique. This book is a call to spiritual arms and a stern warning that might be the catalyst for turning our society around.
