Book Description:
A mayor tells an inspiring story about a city in the middle of the country that has become a blueprint for the future of American renewal.
The Washington Post once called Pete Buttigieg, the Democratic mayor of South Bend, Indiana, “the most interesting mayor you’ve never heard of.” Now, Buttigieg, who is 36 years old, has become one of the most visionary politicians in the country. Buttigieg was first elected in 2011. He left a successful business career to return to his hometown, which Newsweek called a “dying city.” The industrial Midwest called to the Harvard graduate with a McKinsey degree. Buttigieg has made South Bend a shining example of how to change a city for the better. He has done this by meeting city residents on middle school basketball courts, reclaiming abandoned houses, fighting gun violence, and attracting high-tech businesses.
Shortest Way Home weaves together two once-unthinkable success stories: that of an Afghanistan veteran who came out and found love and acceptance while in office and that of a Rust Belt city that has changed so much that it changes the way we think about so-called “flyover country” in America.
There are 29 photos in black and white.
Pete Buttigieg was born in 1982 in Indiana and is now in his second term as mayor of South Bend. Buttigieg went to Harvard and Oxford and is a Rhodes Scholar and Navy veteran. He is also a dynamic national speaker and TEDx speaker. He lives in South Bend, Indiana, with his husband, Chasten Glezman.
