Book Description:
Vinayak Damodar Savarkar is undoubtedly one of the most controversial political thinkers and leaders of the 20th century. He is the intellectual founder of the Hindutva ideology, which is today on the rise in India. His eventful and troubled life has been written about in ways that range from praising hagiographies to vilifying demonizations. The truth is always somewhere in the middle and has never been brought to light. Gandhi, his pacifist philosophy, and the Indian National Congress had a lot of enemies, but Savarkar and his ideas were among the most powerful and dangerous.
Savarkar, who was said to be an atheist and a strong rationalist who disagreed with traditional Hindu beliefs, supported inter-caste marriage and dining, and thought cow worship was just a silly superstition, was probably the most vocal political voice for the Hindu community during India’s fight for independence. As a law student in London, Savarkar was involved in the revolution and helped get international support for India’s freedom. He was then arrested, unfairly tried for sedition, and sent to the Cellular Jail in the Andamans, where he was tortured in ways that were hard to imagine.
What changed him in the Cellular Jail from a hopeful supporter of Hindu-Muslim unity in his treatise on the 1857 War of Independence to a supporter of “Hindutva,” who looked down on Muslims?
Using a wide range of original archival documents from India and other countries, this two-part biography puts Savarkar’s life and philosophy in a new light. The first part looks at the years leading up to his imprisonment and eventual release from the Kalapani. The second part examines Savarkar as a whole, with all his successes and failures.
