About the book
Think Python is a guide to writing in Python for people who have never done it before. It starts with the most basic ideas about programming and is carefully made to explain all terms the first time they are used and build on each new idea in a reasonable way. Larger topics like recursion and object-oriented programming are broken down into a series of smaller steps and presented over the course of several parts.
Working with Python is a great place to start if you want to learn how to code. This hands-on guide takes you through the language step by step, starting with basic programming ideas and going on to functions, loops, data structures, and object-oriented design. This second version and the code that goes with it have been updated to work with Python 3.
You might want to use The First Edition if you are using Python 2.
What’s different about the second edition?
We are now on Python 3: All of the examples in the book are now written in Python 3, and the code that goes with them has been changed to work in both Python 2 and 3.
We’ve taken away the obstacles: We know where people had trouble because they told us, so we fixed or got rid of the trouble spots.
In the browser, Python: Installing Python can be hard for people who are just starting out. If a person doesn’t want to install Python right away, we tell them how to use PythonAnywhere, a free online computer environment, to run Python in a browser.
Even more Python treats: We’ve added a chapter to cover some useful Python features that didn’t make it into the first version, such as list comprehensions and more data structures.
Who Wrote What?
Allen B. Downey is an American computer scientist who writes online courses and teaches computer science at the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering. He has taught computer science at U.C. Berkeley, Wellesley College, and Colby College. He got his Ph.D. in Computer Science from U.C. Berkeley and his Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees from MIT.
